BIM Objects and Change Control

Published by Andrew Pennington, South West Water - Asset Data Development Team Manager in +ve Environment

The financial success of BIM depends on realtime updated model(s) of assets being maintained across their lifecycle (Inception to disposal), all data in the model(s) being “one source of truth”. Where do you see your “one source of truth” being held and how do companies plan to synchronise their GIS with BIM models to co-ordinate change in both BIM and GIS?

Thanks for the link Ian. Having gone over the document today I noticed that paragraph 4.3 Information and asset state synchronization that existed in the draft, has been removed in the final version. Synchronization of the asset information in a BIM model (ie AIM) with other linked systems is absolutely vital to ensure reporting from either the AIM or the linked systems are presenting the correct picture about the asset. This state of synchonization is especially difficult to achieve and the PAS only comments that the IMP Information Management Process should be applied in these cases (Just some poor fella will have to work out how).

Andrew, Although very early days here, we have been investigating the Bentley ProjectWise Collaboration Tools to synchronise with GIS and also to have connectors with SAP and other spatial data systems. The attraction to Projectwise is it's ability to accept a variety of BIM models and also its spatial integration with ESRI and Microstation products.
